LESSON 2
ROMANS 1:8-13
8. First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, That your faith is spoken of through out the whole world.
9. For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son ,that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;
10. Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a PROSPEROUS, journey, by the will of God to come unto you.
11. For I long to see you, that I might impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established.
12. That is, that I may be comforted together with you by mutual ,faith, both of you and me.
13. Now I would not have you ignorant brethren, that of times I purposed to come to you, (but was let hither to) That I might have some fruit among you also even as among the Gentiles.
Wouldnt it be great if the church you go to had this kind of testimony, that your faith was spoken off all over the world. Some churches in our town dont even have a testimony for Jesus that reaches to the next door neighbor, or the next block, but people in Jerusalem had heard of this church in Rome, and of their testimony for Jesus. Pauls life was a life of prayer, when he said he would pray for someone he did it. His prayer life was intertwined with his life of service, No one will ever do anything for God apart from prayer. God leads men through prayer, but NEVER away from the word of God , The Holy Spirit will never lead you where the word of God can not keep you.
VERSE 10: PROSPEROUS: Paul now states the purpose for wanting to come to Rome. He longed to see them, his brethren in the faith, He wanted to fellowship with them, and then he wanted to impart some spiritual gift to them. He did not go there looking for a good offering. He wanted to be a blessing to THEM, he was not looking for a blessing. He wanted to leave them with something that would stay with them. You ever get a blessing you could not forget? Paul was a soul-winner, he wanted to go there so he might have some fruit among them. Then move on to Spain where no man had started a church or laid a foundation. V-10 Paul prayed everything in the will of God .We should always pray God if it be thy will we will do this or that. Paul longed to refresh their memory of the Gospel.
ROMANS 1:14-17
VERSE 14:. I AM A DEBTOR; Both to the Greeks and to the Barbarians; Both to the wise and the unwise.
Paul went about Corinth, and Jerusalem, preaching the gospel of the Lord Jesus, how Jesus came to the world to save sinners, and he felt he had the same conviction, that no mater where he went God would use him to point people to Jesus Christ. If therefore you are saved, should not your conviction be the same. It should be the desire of every born again believer, to lead someone else to Christ. This is the concept that caused Isaac Watts to write" But drops of grief can never repay the debt of LOVE I owe". Paul felt he had a responsibility to preach the same Gospel that saved him to other people To the Greeks and to the Barbarians, In the Jews mind there were Jews and Heathen, to the Greek, there were Greeks and Barbarians, But in the sight of God, There is no difference. All are alike God only sees two kinds of people in this world, The saved and the lost. Paul considered himself a debtor to both the Greeks and the barbarians, He considers himself debtor to the saved and the unsaved. In other words his duty did not stop once a person got saved, he needed to teach them, they needed to learn to serve God.
VERSE-15: So, as much as in me is, I AM READY to preach the Gospel to you that are in Rome also.
With all my heart, with all my mind, with all my soul, That is what he is speaking off here. Matt. 22:23 Jesus said The first and greatest commandment was that you should love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind and soul. Then your neighbor as your self.
This is what Paul was. He was totally committed to the Lord, to preach, teach, wash the floors or clean the church, what every God wanted him to do he was ready to do it, without complaining.VERSE 16: I am not ashamed ; of the Gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation, to the Jew first and also to the Greek (Gentiles)
VERSE 17: For there in is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith "THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH"
This famous statement in the word of God, This is the statement that caused the great reformation you hear so much about . Started by Martin Luther. He was saved by reading this book of Pauls to the Romans, and then he found this statement in V-17 The just shall live by Faith, He discovered a great truth, in the word of God and changed history of the church with it. The just shall live by faith was at the top of his list of 95 theses he hung on the church door. And he started to live by what he had learned, he committed himself to the faith and never wavered on it , stood on it until the death.
